ARTIST BIOGRAPHY

Shaunak Roy, also known as ROYAL, is a Bengali-American musician, singer, rapper, arranger, songwriter, and record producer. He coined the term "Neo Desi" to describe his artistry and creates in a variety of languages, genres, and styles.

Originally trained in Western classical piano, he began producing and arranging music in high school and honed his craft through his collegiate tenures on competitive fusion a cappella and dance teams. After graduating, he embarked on his musical journey as ROYAL.

After several of his mixes and mashups made waves online, ROYAL began working to establish himself and his brand. Digging into his roots, he began writing and producing original songs that fused Bangla and English lyrics. He frequently collaborates with artists that operate in different spaces and enjoys the search for fresh sounds and textures. ROYAL was invited to give a TEDx Talk in 2021 to discuss how he combines multiple identities and influences in his songs.

In 2022, ROYAL began work on his epononymous debut album titled shaunak. The lead single “dosh” was editorialized on Spotify Bangladesh’s New Music Friday. The album was ultimately released in 2023, coinciding with পহেলা বৈশাখ (The Bengali New Year).
